In this project, we supported a Caribbean Public Works Department with the supply and export of a fully customised engineers’ pickup, designed to meet the practical demands of their mechanical support team.
The project required careful vehicle procurement, specialist upgrade coordination, and international logistics management to deliver a durable, ready-to-work solution.
Project Brief
The customer required a robust pickup capable of supporting field engineers and mechanics during daily operations. Key priorities included:
- A reliable base vehicle with strong local parts availability, or the ability to source components internationally if required
- Secure and organised storage for tools and equipment
- Additional electrical capability for operating small tools on-site
- Protection for both payload and vehicle body
- Delivery to the Caribbean ready for immediate operational use
Key Challenges
Delivering a vehicle suitable for heavy engineering use involved coordinating multiple specialist modifications to ensure durability, safety, and long-term performance.
1. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) Upgrade
The additional weight of tools and equipment required a GVW upgrade to ensure the vehicle could legally and safely operate at the required payload capacity. This upgrade needed to be completed before the vehicle moved forward for further conversion work.
2. Heavy-Duty Storage Solutions
To support the mechanics department, we arranged the installation of hardwearing tool drawer systems, providing secure and organised storage within the load area.
3. Onboard Power Capability
Field engineers required access to power for smaller equipment. The vehicle was fitted with:
- An inverter system
- US-spec Type A (two-prong) 12V plug sockets at the rear
- Integrated USB charging points
This setup allows tools and devices to be powered directly from the vehicle during field operations.
4. Towing and Recovery Equipment
To increase versatility, the pickup was equipped with:
- A towbar for equipment transport
- A winch to assist with recovery or positioning tasks in challenging environments
5. Payload Protection
To protect both tools and vehicle bodywork, we arranged:
- A durable bedliner
- A secure canopy, providing weather protection and improved security for equipment
Sourcing and Conversion Management
Interex sourced the base vehicle through established supply channels, ensuring it met the customer’s reliability and serviceability requirements.
We then coordinated the project in stages:
- GVW upgrade completed prior to conversion
- Vehicle transferred to specialist providers for storage, electrical, and accessory installation
- Final inspection to confirm the vehicle met operational specifications
Careful sequencing ensured efficiency while maintaining full compliance and build quality.
Export and Delivery
Once completed, the vehicle was prepared for international transport. Our team arranged:
- Delivery to the UK port facility
- Secure container loading
- Sea freight shipment to the Caribbean destination
The pickup arrived fully equipped and ready for immediate deployment, allowing the Public Works Department to integrate it straight into daily operations.
